It's just a round passive RFID chip, that can be read and written to. First used in the US Border patrol pistols. The tags used then would hold 700 characters of information which maintain the weapon history.

I bought them used, and their trigger pull is slightly smoother and lighter than my still NIB 2021 (CB date code, 126-101XXX) HK45.
